El alcalde, Hiroki Tomita, sostuvo sin problemas al frente de la Alcaldía de la ciudad japonesa de Ikeda, en la prefectura de Osaka, 2019. No obstante está envuelto en un escándalo, al descubrirse recientemente que en julio del año pasado hizo instalar un sauna en su oficina, alegando que era necesario para su salud. El hombre, de 44 años, solía jugar al fútbol americano y sufre una hernia de disco lumbar, una lesión generalmente causada por una tensión excesiva en la columna.
El funcionario se vio obligado a plantear su renuncia después que las comodidades de su oficina salieran a la luz en informes noticiosos, lo que generó críticas por uso indebido de espacios de oficina del gobierno local, informan medios locales.
Su invento habría sido la gota que derramó el vaso y determinó la caída del funcionario. Según los informes, Tomita equipó su oficina con pesas, un microondas y un secador de pelo para uso personal, y entre septiembre y octubre lo encontraron durmiendo en su despacho durante 17 noches.
También ha sido acusado de acosar a varios empleados, incluso de gritarles y obligarlos a lavar las toallas sucias. Criticado además por sumar sus propios gastos en electricidad a la factura de energía de su oficina, se ha comprometido a calcular ahora la diferencia y pagarla de su bolsillo.
Tomita afirma en una conferencia de prensa que hará efectiva su renuncia para «asumir la responsabilidad», pero solo después que el programa de vacunación contra el covid-19 para personas mayores se haya completado en gran medida, sin proporcionar una fecha exacta.
