La sífilis es una infección que por lo general se transmite por el contacto sexual. Esta enfermedad inicia como una llaga sin dolor alguno, por lo general en los genitales, el recto o la boca.
La sífilis puede ser transmitida de persona a persona a través del contacto de la piel o de las membranas mucosas con estas llagas.
Después de ser infectado, en algunas ocasiones la bacteria puede permanecer inactiva (latente) en el cuerpo durante décadas antes de volver a ser activa.
La sífilis temprana se puede curar, algunas veces con una sola inyección de penicilina. Sin tratamiento, la sífilis puede dañar gravemente el corazón, el cerebro u otros órganos, y puede ser potencialmente mortal. La sífilis también puede transmitirse de la madre al feto.
Síntomas
Sífilis primaria: El primer signo de sífilis es una pequeña llaga, llamada chancro. La llaga aparece en el lugar por donde la bacteria entró a su cuerpo.
Sífilis secundaria: Pocas semanas después de la curación de la llaga original, puedes experimentar una erupción que comienza en el tronco, pero que eventualmente cubre todo el cuerpo, incluso las palmas de las manos y las plantas de los pies.
Sífilis latente: Si no recibes tratamiento para la sífilis, la enfermedad pasa de la etapa secundaria a la etapa oculta (latente), durante la cual no tendrás síntomas. La etapa latente puede durar años. Es posible que los signos y síntomas nunca regresen o que la enfermedad avance a la tercera etapa (terciaria).
Sífilis terciaria: Mayormente del 15 % al 30 % de las personas infectadas con sífilis que no reciben tratamiento tendrán complicaciones conocidas como sífilis tardía (terciaria). En la etapa tardía, la enfermedad puede dañar el cerebro, los nervios, los ojos, el corazón, los vasos sanguíneos, el hígado, los huesos y las articulaciones.
