La Oficina de Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito (ONUDD) publicó un informe el 8 de julio, en el que revela que el covid-19 ejerce un impacto devastador sobre las víctimas de la trata de personas y la explotación sexual de los menores.
«La pandemía ha aumentado la vulnerabilidad en la trata de personas, haciéndola aún más difícil de detectar y dejando a las víctimas en mayores dificultades para conseguir ayuda y acceso a la justicia», dijo la directora ejecutiva de la ONUDD, Ghada Waly.
Los traficantes se aprovechan de la pérdida de ingresos y de la mayor cantidad de tiempo que los adultos y los niños pasan en las redes sociales. Con el mercado laboral devastado por la pandemia, los traficantes engañan a sus víctimas con falsas ofertas de trabajo
Los niños son cada vez más vulnerables a la influencia de los traficantes, que utilizan las redes sociales para atraerlos y convertirlos en objetos de tráfico para la explotación sexual, el matrimonio forzado, la mendicidad y la criminalidad.
A su vez, las restricciones y limitaciones de movilidad que se derivan de la pandemia han hecho que los niños tengan menos posibilidades de escapar y regresar a sus países.
«La criminalidad prospera en tiempos de crisis, y los traficantes se han adaptado rápidamente a la ‘nueva normalidad'», dijo Ilias Chatzis, jefe del Departamento de la ONUDD para la Trata de Personas y el Contrabando de Migrantes.
