Un día como hoy, 25 de agosto de 1648, murió, a los 92 años de edad, José de Calasanz Gastón en Roma, Italia. Fue un sacerdote español, fundador de la primera escuela gratis en Europa. Sus aportes a la educación fueron tan importantes que se le considera el precursor de la pedagogía moderna.
Calasanz, aunque no dejó obras escritas, sistematizó la enseñanza de la educación primaria, por niveles y ciclos, con novedosos métodos de enseñanza. Por ejemplo, para la lectura, en la fase inicial, se enseñaba con métodos silábicos, usando cartelones, y luego se pasaba a la lectura de corrido. La escolarización comenzaba a los seis años de edad. Para el control docente, cada maestro tenía tres libros, uno para la matrícula, otro para la asistencia y un tercero para las calificaciones. El eje central del modelo educativo de Calasanz fue el estricto respeto a la personalidad de cada alumno, entendiendo que en cada niño se refleja la imagen de Cristo.
