El empresario colombiano Alex Saab, quien durante años ofició como testaferro al presidente de venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, enfrentó este lunes la primera audiencia judicial ante un tribunal de Miami tras su extradición desde Cabo Verde el pasado sábado.
El juez John J. O’Sullivan, del tribunal federal de Estados Unidos para el distrito sur de Florida, le notificó ocho acusaciones de lavado por varios cientos de millones de dólares presuntamente provenientes de negocios corruptos con la dictadura venezolana: un cargo es por conspirar para lavar dinero, y los otros siete por haber cometido ese delito.
Pese al intento de la defensa, O´Sullivan le negó la libertad bajo fianza al empresario colombiano: la Fiscalía señaló que Saab presentaba “riesgo de fuga”. Además, acordaron que la próxima audiencia se desarrollará el próximo 1 de noviembre. Allí, Saab decidirá si se declara culpable o no culpable.
Luego de escuchar los cargos, el abogado Henry Bell dijo al juez que está pendiente una apelación sobre la supuesta inmunidad diplomática del acusado.
Saab, que llevaba detenido en Cabo Verde desde junio de 2020, enfrenta cargos federales en Estados Unidos por haber lavado presuntamente hasta 350 millones de dólares defraudados a través del sistema de control cambiario en Venezuela.
Según la acusación, entre noviembre de 2011 y septiembre de 2015, Saab y su mano derecha, Álvaro Enrique Pulido, se confabularon con otros individuos para lavar sus ganancias ilícitas y transferirlas desde Venezuela hasta cuentas bancarias en EEUU, razón por la que Washington tiene jurisdicción en el caso.
