Hoy, 25 de noviembre, es el Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer, establecido por la ONU en 1999, con el objetivo de sensibilizar respecto del problema de la violencia contra la mujer y honrar la memoria de las hermanas Mirabal (Patria, Minerva y María Teresa), tres activistas políticas dominicanas asesinadas junto a su chofer, Rufino de la Cruz, por esbirros del dictador Rafael L. Trujillo, justamente un día como hoy, en 1960.
La resolución para establecer esta conmemoración fue promovida por la delegación dominicana que asistió al Primer Encuentro Feminista Latinoamericano y del Caribe, realizado en Bogotá, Colombia, en julio de 1981. Además, por las iniciativas de las feministas dominicanas y el asesinato de las hermanas Mirabal, el Congreso dominicano, en 1993, aprobó la Ley No. 61-93, que declara este día como: Día Nacional de la No Violencia en Contra de la Mujer.
Termino esta nota con el lema de la ONU para este año en esta fecha: “Pinta el mundo de naranja: ¡Pongamos fin a la violencia contra las mujeres YA!”
