Zara Rutherford, una adolescente belgo-británica de 19 años, aterrizó este 20 de enero en el aeropuerto de Kortrijk-Wevelgem (Bélgica) tras completar un viaje de 52.000 kilómetros que abarcó 31 países de los cinco continentes y duró 155 días.
De esta manera, Rutherford se ha hecho con el récord de la mujer más joven de la historia en dar la vuelta al mundo volando en solitario. «Es realmente una locura. No lo he procesado del todo», dijo a la prensa.
Sin embargo, la joven piloto reconoció que hubo «momentos increíbles» en su viaje, pero que en ocasiones temió por su vida.
«Diría que la parte más difícil fue volar sobre Siberia, porque hacía mucho frío. Hacía -35 grados en el suelo… Si el motor se hubiera detenido, habría estado a horas de ser rescatada y no sé cuánto tiempo habría podido sobrevivir», contó.
La travesía comenzó el pasado 18 de agosto, cuando Rutherford despegó desde Bélgica a bordo de su Shark Aero, uno de los aviones ligeros más rápidos del mundo, que puede alcanzar velocidades de hasta 300 kilómetros por hora.
Primero voló hacia el oeste e hizo paradas en el Reino Unido, Groenlandia, las Américas y Rusia. Luego viajó al sureste de Asia, al norte de la India, Medio Oriente y Egipto. Por último, hizo el trayecto de regreso a Europa.
Rutherford espera que su historia inspire a otras jóvenes que desean convertirse en pilotos algún día.
