Hoy, 11 de febrero, es el Día Mundial de la Mujer Médica, establecido para reconocer a Elizabeth Blackwell, quien fue la primera mujer médica moderna de occidente. Nació en Inglaterra y, desde los 11 años, vivió y estudió en Los Estados Unidos. Al ingresar a la universidad, fue rechazada en diez escuelas de medicina, y logró ser admitida en Geneva Medical College, New York.
Elizabeth Blackwell se graduó en 1849. En su ejercicio profesional, mostró una gran sensibilidad humana y se convirtió en una defensora de la justicia social. Junto a su hermana, fundó una escuela de enfermería en Nueva York. También fundó una escuela de medicina para mujeres.
