Hoy, 19 de marzo, se conmemora la Batalla del 19 de Marzo en República Dominicana (RD), escenificada en Azua entre el Ejército dominicano y el Ejército haitiano. Esa fue la primera gran batalla en defensa de la independencia de la naciente República, lograda el 27 de febrero de 1844.
Conforme al historiador José Gabriel García, luego de proclamada la separación de Haití, el primer enfrentamiento con el Ejército haitiano ocurrió el 11 de marzo de 1844, en la Fuente del Rodeo, Neiba, cuando las tropas dominicanas derrotaron una avanzada de las tropas haitianas, lo que se conoce como “bautismo de sangre”.
