La oficina regional de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) para Europa informó este martes que tanto las tasas de sobrepeso como de obesidad en el continente «han alcanzado proporciones epidémicas», y que se espera que estas enfermedades sigan aumentando.
El organismo argumentó que esto podría ocurrir debido a que ningún país europeo cumplirá el objetivo mundial de Enfermedades No Transmisibles (ENT) propuesto por la OMS para frenar el aumento de los casos de obesidad para 2025.

También detalló que el 59 % de los adultos en el continente europeo presentan sobrepeso u obesidad, así como uno de cada tres infantes, de los cuales el 29 % son niños y 27 % son niñas.
La sección europea de la OMS comentó que «el sobrepeso y la obesidad se encuentran entre las principales causas de muerte y discapacidad en la región», provocando más de 1,2 millones de decesos al año, lo que representa más del 13 % de la mortalidad total en el continente, según estadísticas actuales.
«La obesidad aumenta el riesgo de muchas ENT, incluidos el cáncer, las enfermedades cardiovasculares, la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y las enfermedades respiratorias crónicas», señaló la organización, que además consideró que esta es la causante «de al menos 13 tipos diferentes de cáncer», así como la probable responsable de «al menos 200.000 nuevos casos de cáncer al año» en Europa.
«La obesidad no conoce fronteras», indicó el director de la oficina de la OMS en Europa, Hans Henri P. Kluge, quien agregó que «ningún país por sí solo va a cumplir el objetivo global de la OMS para las ENT de detener el aumento de la obesidad».
Sin embargo, dijo que los países europeos «son increíblemente diversos, pero cada uno enfrenta desafíos hasta cierto punto». «Al crear entornos que sean más propicios, promover la inversión y la innovación en salud y desarrollar sistemas de salud fuertes y resilientes, podemos cambiar la trayectoria de la obesidad en la región», concluyó Kluge.
