El periodista polaco y antiguo opositor al régimen comunista Adam Michnik fue galardonado con el Premio Princesa de Asturias de Comunicación y Humanidades 2022, anunció este miércoles el jurado de este galardón español.
El jurado de este premio dotado con 50.000 euros (unos 53.000 dólares) recompensó al periodista de 75 años «por su compromiso con el periodismo de calidad y por su influencia en la recuperación y en la defensa de la democracia en Polonia».
En declaraciones difundidas por el Princesa de Asturas, Michnik dijo que el premio es «un reconocimiento a la oposición democrática en Polonia, que tanto aprendió de la Transición española» a la democracia tras la dictadura de Francisco Franco (1939-1975).
Asimismo, consideró que es una distinción «a la labor de Gazeta Wyborcza», el diario que dirige desde su fundación hace más de tres décadas.
Nacido en Varsovia el 17 de octubre de 1946 en una familia judía, Adam Michnik se unió muy pronto a la oposición al régimen impuesto a Polonia por Moscú tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que se prolongaría hasta 1989. Mientras estudiaba historia en la Universidad de Varsovia, coorganizó una manifestación estudiantil en marzo de 1968 que reclamaba mayor libertad de expresión.
El régimen utilizó la revuelta estudiantil, que fue aplastada por la policía, como excusa para desencadenar una campaña antisemita que llevó a miles de judíos polacos a emigrar.
Michnik se negó a abandonar Polonia. Fue expulsado de la universidad y condenado a tres años de prisión por gamberrismo, pero acabó concluyendo sus estudios de historia, a distancia en la Universidad Adam Mickiewicz de Poznań.
Michnik pasó en total seis años en las prisiones del régimen comunista y fue uno de los impulsores de la reconciliación nacional. Fue uno de los fundadores del movimiento KOR (Comité de Defensa de los Obreros) y, más tarde, miembro del sindicato Solidaridad desde su creación, en 1980.
En 1989, tres años después de su última estancia en la cárcel, se convirtió en diputado, en la cámara ya democrática, y dirige el diario Gazeta Wyborcza desde su fundación, ese mismo año.
