El presidente del Gobierno español, Pedro Sánchez, interrumpió su visita a Serbia debido a los acontecimientos que suceden en la frontera entre Serbia y Kosovo.
Este domingo 31 de julio las fuerzas especiales de Kosovo bloquearon las carreteras con Serbia. Se escucharon sirenas de alarma aérea en Serbia y Kosovo. Además, lciudadanos empezaron a levantar barricadas en varios lugares del norte de Kosovo y en la frontera con Serbia.
Al igual que hará en el resto de su gira, el presidente del Gobierno español quería animar a Belgrado a avanzar en las reformas necesarias que les permitan acercarse a la meta de formar parte de la Unión Europea.
El Gobierno español subrayó que Serbia tiene una especial amistad con España, a lo que contribuye que sea uno de los cinco países de la UE que no reconocen la independencia de Kosovo.
La posición española es mantener una actitud «constructiva» en el diálogo entre Belgrado y Prístina para alcanzar una solución.
Pedro Sánchez, llegó el 29 de julio a Belgrado en la primera etapa de su gira por los Balcanes Occidentales para reforzar las relaciones bilaterales y respaldar los procesos de adhesión a la UE de los países de la zona.
Durante su gira balcánica además tenía planeado visitar a Sarajevo y Mostar (Bosnia Herzegovina), Podgorica (Montenegro), Skopje (Macedonia del Norte) y Tirana (Albania).
