El once veces campeón de la NBA con los Boston Celtics, Bill Russell, falleció este domingo a los 88 años, informó su familia con un mensaje en la cuenta de Twitter del exjugador.
El anuncio lo hizo la familia a través de un comunicado de prensa. No se detalló la causa de muerte, pero la familia sí escribió que murió “en paz”.
Nacido en Luisiana, hizo su carrera en San Francisco, en donde se convirtió en uno de los mejores bloqueadores de tiros de la historia.
De acuerdo al The New York Post, con la muerte de Russell la comunidad del baloncesto perdió a una leyenda de todos los tiempos. La superestrella ostenta un récord de 11 títulos de la NBA con los Celtics entre 1956 y 1969. En 1966 los Celtics lo contrataron como jugador-entrenador y se convirtió en el primer entrenador en jefe afroamericano de cualquier equipo profesional norteamericano.
Instalado en el Salón de la Fama en 1975 como jugador y en el 2021 como entrenador, Russell ganó dos títulos de la NCAA en San Francisco, obtuvo el oro olímpico y dos títulos de la NBA como entrenador, además de sus 11 anillos como jugador.
También fue un líder en el área de los derechos civiles, soportando abusos racistas a lo largo de su carrera en la NBA.
