La República Dominicana está en búsqueda de medidas ante la llegada masiva de sargazo a las costas del país, dado su impacto económico y social y la problemática que supone para el medioambiente costero, el turismo y la salud.
Con este objetivo, el Ministerio dominicano de Medio Ambiente constituyó este viernes una Mesa Multisectorial para la Gestión Integral del Sargazo, a fin de desarrollar y aplicar actuaciones para proteger los ecosistemas marinos de los efectos nocivos de este tipo de algas.
Según el ministro dominicano de Medio Ambiente, Miguel Ceara Hatton, quien encabeza la mesa, la expansión del sargazo la han generado, directa e indirectamente, “la fertilización acuática, el cambio climático, el uso de suelo inadecuado y la acidificación de los océanos”, creándose un desequilibrio al que se debe responder “con un manejo especial”.
Indicó que en los últimos años grandes masas de algas marinas, fundamentalmente del género Sargassum, han arribado a las costas del mar Caribe, lo que ha impedido que bañistas, pescadores y embarcaciones puedan hacer libre uso del litoral.
