La Comisión de Salud de la Provincia Guangdong, al sur de China, informó este jueves la existencia de un nuevo caso de infección de la cepa H5N6 de la gripe aviar en seres humanos.
El nuevo caso se dio en la ciudad de Dongguan, en un contexto en el que el aumento de personas infectadas con la gripe aviar en China durante el 2021 está generando preocupación entre los expertos, quienes explican que la situación actual está dada, probablemente, por la mutación de una cepa que se ha vuelto mucho más infecciosa para los seres humanos que sus predecesoras.
Durante el año en curso, China ha informado a la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) de 21 casos de infecciones humanas con el subtipo H5N6 de la influenza aviar, lo cual significa un notable incremento si se compara con solo 5 infecciones en el año anterior.
«El aumento de los casos humanos en China este año es preocupante. Es un virus que causa una alta mortalidad», dijo Thijs Kuiken, profesor de patología comparada en el Centro Médico de la Universidad Erasmus en Rotterdam, quien explicó que se necesita con urgencia, una mayor investigación al respecto que permita comprender el aumento actual de contagios en personas, así como los riesgos potenciales que ello implica.
Un estudio publicado en el sitio web del Centro Chino para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, citado por Reuters, afirma que «la creciente diversidad genética y distribución geográfica del H5N6 representa una seria amenaza para la industria avícola y la salud humana».
