SpaceX anunció que su cohete Falcon Heavy despegó este viernes, desde la plataforma 39A del Centro Espacial Kennedy en Florida, con la meta de colocar en una órbita de transferencia geosíncrona al satélite de comunicaciones Jupiter 3 (EchoStar XXIV) de la compañía Hughes Network Systems, el más grande jamás construido.
De igual forma, confirmó que los propulsores laterales del cohete tomaron tierra en la zona de aterrizaje 1 y 2 (LZ1 y LZ-2), ubicadas en la Estación de la Fuerza Espacial de EE.UU. en Cabo Cañaveral.
Sin embargo, el portal Space.com indicó que el propulsor central se hundió en el océano Atlántico, luego de quedarse sin combustible para retornar al sitio de recuperación de componentes.
Este fue el tercer lanzamiento y despegue de los propulsores laterales del Falcon Heavy, que anteriormente fueron utilizados en las misiones clasificadas USSF-44 y USSF-67 de la Fuerza Espacial estadounidense. Por otro lado, la empresa de Elon Musk señaló que el Jupiter 3 fue desplegado 3 horas y media después del despegue.
Según Hughes Network Systems, los paneles solares del satélite miden aproximadamente 39 metros de longitud, por lo que, en cuanto a tamaño, es más grande que una ballena azul. El lanzamiento del Jupiter 3 fue cancelado en dos ocasiones por diversas razones aún no detalladas por la compañía.
