El gigante estadounidense de las redes sociales Meta fue multado este lunes con 1.200 millones de euros (casi 1.300 millones de dólares) por incumplir normas de protección de datos europeas, en la sanción más alta impuesta en Europa por este tipo de infracciones.
Meta, que considera apelar la decisión, fue condenada por haber “seguido transfiriendo datos personales” de usuarios de Facebook procedentes del Espacio Económico Europeo hacia Estados Unidos, explicó la Comisión Irlandesa de Protección de Datos (DPC).
Esta actúa en nombre de la Unión Europea vigilando la aplicación del Reglamento General de Protección de Datos (RGPD) de la UE, porque la sede europea del grupo estadounidense se encuentra en Irlanda.
La decisión también impone a Meta “suspender todas las transferencias de datos personales a Estados Unidos en un plazo de cinco meses” desde que se le notifique la decisión y cumplir con el RGPD en un plazo de seis meses, agregó la DPC.
Esta multa, la más alta jamás impuesta por un regulador de protección de datos en Europa, es el resultado de una investigación iniciada en 2020.
