Nuevos hechos de violencia y saqueos estallaron en varias ciudades de Haití tras la decisión del gobierno de aumentar los precios del combustible, con manifestantes que incluso saquearon un almacén del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) de la ONU.
El depósito del PMA ubicado en Gonaïves, la tercera ciudad más grande del país, que contenía 1.400 toneladas de alimentos, fue atacado el jueves por los manifestantes, mientras hubo demostraciones de ira en las calles de la capital, Puerto Príncipe, y en otras ciudades provinciales.
En un comunicado difundido el viernes, el PMA condenó el ataque a su oficina y el saqueo de su almacén, y destacó que los alimentos iban destinados a programas de alimentación escolar y a las familias y niños más vulnerables de Haití, un país absorbido por la crisis.
«Es simplemente inaceptable. Se suponía que los alimentos saqueados darían de comer a casi 100.000 escolares hasta fin de año», dijo Jean-Martin Bauer, director del PMA en Haití, citado en el comunicado.
Según el diario Le Nouvelliste, los locales de la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas de Servicios para Proyectos (UNOPS), varias escuelas religiosas, una universidad pública y empresas fueron vandalizadas y saqueadas.
