Un día como hoy, 7 de mayo de 1824, se estrenó en Viena, Austria, la Novena Sinfonía del compositor alemán Ludwig van Beethoven, la cual constituye una oda a la alegría y a la fraternidad, cuyo final se convirtió en un símbolo de la libertad y en un himno a la alegría. El día del estreno ya Beethoven estaba totalmente sordo; afección que padecía desde temprana edad.
El 19 de diciembre de 2002, la partitura original de la referida sinfonía fue acogida por la Unesco como Patrimonio de la Humanidad, constituyendo la primera obra de esa naturaleza en recibir esa distinción.
