Un día como hoy, pero del 1492, Cristóbal Colón, durante su primer viaje llegó a la de Quisqueya, nombrada así por los indígenas a la que bautizó como «La Española»,que es actualmente compartida por los países República Dominicana y Haití.
En la isla existían grandes yacimiento de oro lo que provocó el asentamiento de españoles, el primero fue La Isabela fundado en 1943.
Los taínos se convirtieron en esclavos de los españoles, obligados a trabajos inhumanos que culminaron en su total desaparición.
El hermano de Colón, Bartolomé, en el 1496 fundó la Ciudad de Santo Domingo y fue nombrado gobernador de la misma.
Santo Domingo se convirtió rápidamente en la más representativa de la Corona Real Española y, posteriormente, en una ciudad de mucha influencia y poder.
La isla de La Española permaneció bajo control español hasta 1697, cuando la parte occidental de la isla se convirtió en una posesión francesa que, en 1804, se transformó en la República de Haití, llamado “Saint Domingue” por los franceses.
