Los líderes de la Unión Europea (UE) y China se reunieron en una cumbre virtual el 1 de abril, en medio de las crecientes tensiones por el apoyo tácito del Partido Comunista Chino (PCCh) a la invasión de Rusia en Ucrania.
“Pedimos a China que ponga fin a la guerra en Ucrania”, dijo el presidente de la UE, Charles Michel, durante una rueda de prensa tras la reunión. “China no puede hacer la vista gorda ante la violación del derecho internacional por parte de Rusia”.
La UE aprovechó la ocasión para advertir al PCCh de que no ayude más al esfuerzo bélico ruso abiertamente.
“Cualquier intento de eludir las sanciones o proporcionar ayuda a Rusia prolongaría la guerra”, añadió Michel. “Esto provocaría más pérdidas de vidas y un mayor impacto económico”.
“También permaneceremos atentos a cualquier intento de ayudar a Rusia financiera o militarmente. Sin embargo, los pasos positivos de China para ayudar a terminar la guerra serían bienvenidos por todos los europeos y por la comunidad global”.
Michel también dijo que la UE y el PCCh estaban de acuerdo en que la guerra en Ucrania era una amenaza para la seguridad mundial.
Según una nota china de la cumbre, el líder chino Xi Jinping calificó la crisis de Ucrania de “lamentable”. También afirmó que la posición del régimen sobre la cuestión era “coherente y clara” y que “siempre está del lado de la paz”.
