El secretario de Defensa de los Estados Unidos, Lloyd Austin, anunció este martes la creación de un foro de países de la OTAN y aliados que se reunirán una vez al mes para coordinar el apoyo militar a Ucrania.
Tras una cumbre en la base aérea de Ramstein, en el sur de Alemania, que reunió a unos 40 responsables de Defensa de todo el mundo, Austin anunció que a partir de este formato se desarrollará un «grupo de contacto sobre la autodefensa de Ucrania».
El secretario general de la OTAN, Jens Soltenberg, canceló su participación en este encuentro en el último momento por motivos de salud.
El objetivo del nuevo foro será permitir que las «naciones de buena voluntad» coordinen esfuerzos en base a principios de «transparencia, integración y diálogo,» afirmó Austin en una rueda de prensa al término de la reunión.
Aseguró que la jornada fue «importante y constructiva» y que todos los participantes han salido «más determinados que nunca» a ayudar a Ucrania a «vencer» y a defenderse «contra la agresión y las atrocidades rusas».
Además, subrayó que según le comunicó el presidente ucraniano, Volodímir Zelenski, en su reunión en Kiev el pasado domingo, el apoyo militar suministrado hasta ahora ha tenido un impacto decisivo «en el campo de batalla».
En este sentido, el secretario de Defensa saludó expresamente el anuncio de que Alemania autorizará el envío de 50 tanques con capacidad de defensa antiaérea y la noticia de que Canadá suministrará ocho vehículos acorazados, ambas conocidas hoy.
«Es un progreso importante,» señaló, aunque advirtió de que «no hay tiempo que perder», ya que las próximas semanas de conflicto serán «cruciales» y es por ello necesario avanzar con el apoyo a Ucrania «a la velocidad que marca la guerra».
Otro de los retos para los aliados de Kiev, aseveró, será hacer frente a la «tremenda demanda» de municiones y equipamiento bélico por parte de Ucrania sin desatender las necesidades nacionales, aunque se comprometió a «redoblar esfuerzos» en este sentido.
