El exministro de Economía guatemalteco Acisclo Valladares Urruela se declaró culpable en un tribunal federal de Miami (Florida) de los delitos de “conspirar para cometer lavado de dinero” y soborno, informó este viernes un medio local.
Valladares admitió haber transferido 350,000 dólares en pagos de soborno a políticos guatemaltecos no identificados a través de dos empresas con cuentas bancarias en Miami, según una declaración de culpabilidad.
El exalto funcionario guatemalteco también reconoció haber recibido 140,000 dólares para mover dinero de origen ilegal, recogió el diario Miami Herald.
Valladares, de 44 años, usó el nombre de la empresa de telecomunicaciones Tigo, para la que trabajaba como director corporativo, a fin de pagar los sobornos a políticos guatemaltecos. A cambio, señala el citado diario, estos allanaron el camino para que esa empresa obtuviera una serie de lucrativos contratos gubernamentales en Guatemala.
En la declaración de culpabilidad, Valladares, abogado de profesión, antes de convertirse en ministro de Economía del país centroamericano, participó en una serie de transacciones que beneficiaron a esa empresa de telecomunicaciones e “involucraron a instituciones financieras tanto guatemaltecas como estadounidenses”.
Los fiscales federales de EE.UU. pudieron presentar la acusación contra Valladares debido a que parte del dinero obtenido a través de la trama de corrupción fue transferido en 2017 por medio de empresas de Miami hacia políticos guatemaltecos.
