La ciudad insular y otras ciudades costeras del estado de la Florida han querido prohibir fumar en la playa durante años, pero una ley estatal les impedía hacerlo: se consideraba que eso era potestad de los legisladores estatales.
Eso cambió el 1 de julio de 2022, luego de que el gobernador Ron DeSantis firmase un nuevo proyecto de ley que otorga a las ciudades el derecho a prohibir fumar en la playa. Pompano Beach impuso una prohibición de inmediato. Otras ciudades, como Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton y Delray Beach, lo han hecho o lo harán próximamente.
