La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) anunció este lunes que mantendrá el nivel máximo de alerta para la pandemia de covid-19, exactamente tres años después de haber declarado la enfermedad como urgencia de salud pública internacional.
El anuncio se produce luego de que el director general del organismo Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus siguiera las recomendaciones del comité de urgencia sobre el coronavirus, compuesto por expertos que se reunieron el viernes, según un comunicado.
«Al entrar en el cuarto año de la pandemia, no hay duda de que estamos en una situación mucho mejor ahora que hace un año, cuando la ola de ómicron estaba en su apogeo», declaró Tedros a la junta ejecutiva de la OMS en Ginebra este lunes.
Sin embargo, «desde principios de diciembre, las muertes reportadas semanalmente han ido en aumento» y «en las últimas ocho semanas, más de 170.000 personas han perdido la vida a causa del covid-19», agregó.
El comité declaró la epidemia de covid-19 como una emergencia de salud pública mundial el 30 de enero de 2020, en momentos en que no se había registrado aún ningún deceso sobre apenas 100 casos fuera de China.
