El jefe de Batallón de la División de Bomberos de la ciudad de Columbus, Steve Martin, detalló que el techo «estaba sobrecargado de estudiantes» y que había entre 15 y 45 personas en una azotea «que no estaba diseñada para tener a nadie en ella, y cedió».
Según Martin, el resto del edificio permaneció intacto.
