La espiral de violencia en la que se encuentra sumida Haití no amaina, según los últimos datos publicados por Naciones Unidas. El último informe recoge que el número de víctimas de asesinatos, lesiones y secuestros subió un 28 % durante el primer trimestre de este 2023, en comparación con los tres últimos meses del año pasado.
El país lleva varios años inmerso en este clima de violencia, que se fijó a partir de 2021 tras el asesinato del entonces presidente Jovenel Moïse, en julio de ese año. Desde entonces, la situación no ha hecho más que empeorar.
El principal motivo de inseguridad es la violencia de las pandillas, que ya controlaban buena parte del territorio y que buscan extender su dominio. Así, áreas de la capital del país, Puerto Príncipe, que tradicionalmente habían sido consideradas seguras, como Kenscoff y Pétion Ville, ya han empezado a verse afectadas.
Las acciones de las bandas incluyen la utilización de violencia sexual, especialmente contra mujeres y niñas, como arma para aterrorizar a la población y conseguir su dominio. Aunque estos delitos están infradenunciados, una organización local de derechos humanos alertó que al menos 652 mujeres y niñas fueron sometidas a violaciones individuales y colectivas en áreas controladas por pandillas durante el último año.
