El secretario de Estado de EE.UU., Antony Blinken, anunció este viernes que el Gobierno estadounidense prohibió la entrada en su territorio del ex primer ministro de Haití, Laurent Lamothe (2012-2014) por su implicación en actividades corruptas «significativas» en su país.
Blinken explicó que Lamothe, que fue también ministro de Planificación y Cooperación Exterior en Haití, «se apropió indebidamente de al menos 60 millones de dólares del fondo de bienestar social y de inversiones en infraestructuras Petrocaribe, del Gobierno, para su beneficio personal».
A través de estas acciones y de su «implicación directa» en la gestión de dicho fondo, Lamothe se aprovechó de su puesto como funcionario público y contribuyó a la estabilidad actual de Haití, indicó el jefe de la diplomacia estadounidense
Lamothe está relacionado con un escándalo de corrupción que ha vinculado a miembros de varios Gobiernos en Haití con la supuesta malversación de 2,000 millones de dólares de fondos del programa Petrocaribe.
