Hablando desde el Cross Hall de la Casa Blanca, el presidente repitió las afirmaciones de que la Segunda Enmienda “no es absoluta”, e instó a los legisladores a reforzar las leyes de control de armas y, si eso falla, a que la gente convierta su “indignación en un tema central para su voto”.
Biden expuso lo que llamó “medidas racionales y de sentido común” para que el Congreso las considere. Sin embargo, señaló que los demócratas necesitarían al menos el apoyo de 10 republicanos en el Senado.
“Tenemos que prohibir las armas de asalto y los cargadores de alta capacidad y si no podemos prohibir las armas de asalto, entonces debemos elevar la edad para comprarlas de 18 a 21 años; reforzar los controles de antecedentes; promulgar leyes de almacenamiento seguro y de alerta roja; derogar la inmunidad que protege a los fabricantes de armas de la responsabilidad civil; abordar la crisis de salud mental, profundizando en el trauma de la violencia armada”, dijo Biden
Las declaraciones del presidente se produjeron tras una serie de tiroteos masivos en Texas, Oklahoma y Nueva York.
Biden dijo que su discurso no trataba de “quitarle las armas a nadie”, al tiempo que reafirmó su posición de que “la Segunda Enmienda, como todos los demás derechos, no es absoluta”.
“No se trata de quitarle los derechos a nadie. Se trata de proteger a los niños. Se trata de proteger a las familias. Se trata de proteger a comunidades enteras. Se trata de proteger nuestras libertades para ir a la escuela, a una tienda de comestibles, a una iglesia sin que nos disparen y nos maten”, dijo Biden.
