Un día como hoy, 12 de septiembre de 1958, el físico e ingeniero electricista estadounidense Jack St. Clair Kilby, probó de manera exitosa el primer chip o microchip, conocido en el mundo de la electrónica como Circuito Integrado (CI), fabricado sobre una base (pastilla) cuadrada de germanio, que es un elemento químico semimetálico cristalino de alta resistencia.
Por este gran aporte al mundo de la tecnología de la información, Jack St. Clair Kilby, en el año 2000, recibió el Premio Nobel de Física. Hoy día, los Circuitos Integrados han revolucionado el mundo de la electrónica; gracias a ellos disponemos de computadoras cada vez más compactas, teléfonos móviles inteligentes y una gran variedad de dispositivos electrónicos de bajos costos.
