El Ministerio de Salud declaró hoy que una chilena de 43 años que reside en Estados Unidos, viajó a Chile contagiada con COVID-19 y que el virus corresponde a la nueva cepa Delta convirtiendose en el primer caso registrado en el país. «Desgraciadamente tenemos que confirmar la llegada de la variante Delta del COVID-19 al país, es una mujer de 43 años proveniente de Estados Unidos», confirmó en conferencia de prensa el ministro de Salud, Enrique Paris.
La mujer ingresó la semana pasada al país con un examen PCR negativo y realizó el aislamiento correspondiente en Santiago; posteriormente se trasladó a la ciudad de Talca (centro sur) para asistir a un funeral y en ese lugar se le realizó un test de anticuerpos, al que dio positivo. A raíz de que la paciente venía del extranjero sus exámenes fueron enviados al Instituto de Salud Pública para estudio, donde el virus fue secuenciado y se detectó finalmente que se trataba de la variante Delta.
La variante Delta del SARS-CoV-2, el virus del COVID-19, es más agresiva, duplica el riesgo de hospitalización y en Latinoamérica ya se han detectado casos en Argentina, Perú y México. Desde el 11 de marzo de 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) califica como pandemia la enfermedad COVID-19 causada por el nuevo coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, detectado por primera vez a finales de 2019. En Chile se han contagiado 1.528.409 personas, de las cuales 31.746 fallecieron.
A nivel global son 179.065.823 los casos confirmados y 3.886.347 los fallecidos, de acuerdo al último informe de la OMS.
