Las autoridades chinas expresaron su protesta ante Lituania por la apertura de una oficina de representación de Taiwán en Vilna y amenazaron con tomar medidas de represalia.
Añadió que la apertura de la oficina de representación de Taiwán, que fue inaugurada este jueves en Lituania, socava la soberanía y la integridad territorial de China y representa una «grave interferencia en los asuntos internos de la República Popular China».
«Exigimos a Lituania que corrija de inmediato esta decisión equivocada. También advertimos estrictamente a las autoridades de Taiwán que la búsqueda de independencia mediante la solicitud de apoyo extranjero es absolutamente incorrecta y está condenada al fracaso», subraya la nota.
El pasado 20 de julio se supo que en Lituania se abriría una Oficina de Representación de Taiwán, la primera misión con este nombre en Europa en casi dos décadas. Previamente, Lituania anunció la intención de instalar una oficina comercial en Taiwán.
El 10 de agosto, China reaccionó llamando a consultas a su embajador en Vilna. Lituania, a su vez, llamó a consultas a su embajadora en Pekín, en respuesta simétrica.
Las relaciones oficiales entre Pekín y Taipéi quedaron suspendidas en 1949, después de que las fuerzas del partido nacionalista chino Kuomintang, encabezado por Chiang Kai-shek, sufrieran una derrota en la guerra civil contra el Partido Comunista de China y se trasladaron a Taiwán.
