La Comisión Europea autorizó a Croacia adoptar el euro como la moneda única desde el 1 de enero de 2023, tras cumplir con todos los requisitos económicos y legales para convertirse en el vigésimo país de la eurozona.
«Para Croacia sirve de recordatorio de lo lejos que ha llegado el país en las últimas tres décadas, cuando en los años 90 estaba experimentando el horror de la guerra. Dimos la bienvenida a Croacia en la Unión (Europea) en 2013 y hemos concluido que Croacia está lista para adoptar nuestra moneda única el 1 de enero de 2023», ha explicado el comisario europeo de Economía, Paolo Gentiloni.
El anuncio ha coincidido con la visita del primer ministro croata, Andrej Plenkovic, a Berlín, en donde se ha reunido con el canciller alemán, Olaf Scholz. Plenkovic no sólo aspira a que su país entre en la eurozona, sino también a formar parte del espacio Schengen.
De entrada Zagreb, cambiará la kuna, su actual moneda de curso legal, por el euro desde el 1 de enero de 2023. La decisión política se adoptará en la reunión de los ministros de Economía y Finanzas de los Veintisiete (el Ecofin), prevista para primeros de julio.
