Uno de los trastornos de aprendizaje más comunes que afecta a los niños en edad escolar es la Dislexia. Es por ello que el 8 de octubre se celebra el Día Internacional de la Dislexia, para concienciar a las personas acerca de este trastorno que afecta al 10% de la población mundial, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
La fecha ha sido reconocida oficialmente por la Asociación Europea de Dislexia, propuesta por varias asociaciones de familias con dislexia.
De acuerdo a cifras estimadas, los niños disléxicos (con edades comprendidas entre los 7 y 9 años) representan entre el 3 y el 6% de la población infantil, presentando esta condición más en los niños que en las niñas.
El contenido curricular del sistema educativo actual está basado en el aprendizaje, a través de la lectura, la escritura y la memorización, generando marcadas condiciones de desigualdad en los niños con dislexia, debido a su dificultad para la comprensión y el aprendizaje.
