El Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos sancionó el sábado a 100 funcionarios municipales de Nicaragua acusados de participar en violaciones de derechos humanos por su participación en el cierre de una universidad popular y el encarcelamiento de un destacado obispo.
Las sanciones incluyen la prohibición de viajar a Estados Unidos. Los funcionarios están acusados de reprimir a la sociedad civil y cerrar espacios cívicos como la Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), colegio jesuita que fue incautado por el gobierno esta semana.
Hace un año el gobierno encarceló al obispo Rolando Álvarez, un feroz crítico del presidente Daniel Ortega, quien fue sentenciado a 26 años de cárcel.
El secretario de Estado, Antony Blinken, dijo en un comunicado el sábado que los funcionarios sancionados permitieron o facilitaron campañas violentas, detenciones injustas y restricciones a los derechos humanos y las libertades fundamentales.
“Seguimos pidiendo la liberación inmediata e incondicional del obispo Álvarez en Nicaragua y el fin de la represión sistemática”, agregó el subsecretario para Asuntos del Hemisferio Occidental, Brian Nichols, en sus cuentas de redes sociales.
Washington sancionó previamente a las principales figuras de la administración de Ortega, incluida la vicepresidenta Rosario Murillo, tres de sus hijos, altos funcionarios del gobierno y altos mandos de la policía y el ejército. La Unión Europea y Canadá se han sumado a esas sanciones.
