EE.UU. impuso sanciones financieras este jueves en contra del vicepresidente de Paraguay, Hugo Velázquez, y del expresidente de ese país Horacio Cartes.
El Departamento de Estado anunció, a través de un comunicado, que la medida contra estos dos políticos paraguayos se tomó «por su participación en la corrupción sistémica que ha socavado las instituciones democráticas en Paraguay».

Las sanciones además recaen sobre cuatro entidades de propiedad o controladas por Cartes: Tabacos USA Inc., Bebidas USA Inc., Dominicana Acquisition SA y Frigorífico Chajha SAE.
