El ministro de Justicia surcoreano anunció que el vicepresidente y líder de facto de Samsung será liberado de la cárcel el viernes 13 de agosto, después de cumplir parte de una sentencia de 30 meses por sobornar al ex presidente de Corea del Sur , Park Geun-hye.
Lee se vio envuelto en un gran escándalo de corrupción que derrocó al gobierno de Park en 2016. Park fue sentenciado a 20 años de prisión y multado con 18 mil millones de wones (£ 12 millones).
Lee, de 53 años, ha cumplido 18 meses de una sentencia revisada de 30 meses. Inicialmente cumplió un año de una sentencia de cinco años desde agosto de 2017, que luego fue suspendida. Esa decisión judicial fue luego anulada aunque se acortó la sentencia
El escándalo, que sacudió a la sociedad surcoreana, fue provocado por los intentos de Lee de persuadir al gobierno de que facilitara la sucesión del imperio Samsung a su padre Lee Kun-hee, quien fue hospitalizado tras un infarto en 2014 y murió el año pasado.
