El escritor británico-estadounidense de origen indio Salman Rushdie fue sometido a horas de cirugía y se encuentra conectado a un ventilador después de que fuera apuñalado en el cuello y el torso en el escenario durante una conferencia en Nueva York.
«Las noticias no son buenas», informó Andrew Wylie, su agente literario. «Salman probablemente perderá un ojo, le seccionaron los nervios de un brazo y recibió una puñalada en el hígado».
El ataque se produjo cuando un hombre corrió hacia el escenario donde se encontraba Rushdie y se abalanzó sobre él. Mientras el atacante era inmovilizado y detenido por la Policía, el escritor fue atendido por asistentes y las autoridades en el escenario. Posteriormente, Rushdie fue evacuado a un centro médico en helicóptero.
Su libro ‘Los versos satánicos’, publicado en 1988, provocó una gran polémica en el mundo musulmán, debido a la supuesta irreverencia con que se trata a la figura del profeta Mahoma y fue tachado de blasfemo. La obra fue prohibida en Irán y, un año después de su lanzamiento, el ayatolá Ruhollah Jomeiní, el entonces líder religioso de la República Islámica, leyó un edicto religioso, o fetua, instando a la ejecución del escritor.
