El funeral del pontífice emérito Benedicto XVI, fallecido hoy a los 95 años, será el próximo 5 de enero, a las 9.30 horas (8:30 GMT), en la plaza de San Pedro, informó el portavoz del Vaticano, Matteo Bruni. El papa Francisco oficiará el funeral.
El Vaticano informó hoy de la muerte del pontífice alemán, que había renunciado en 2013, con un escueto comunicado: «Con pesar doy a conocer que el Papa emérito Benedicto XVI ha fallecido a las 9:34 horas (8:34 GMT) en el Monasterio Mater Ecclesiae del Vaticano».

Según avanzó Bruni, Benedicto XVI dejó como última voluntad que su funeral fuera «lo más sencillo posible. Solemne pero sobrio».
