El jefe de la Agencia Nacional de Policía de Japón ha anunciado este jueves su dimisión para asumir la responsabilidad por el asesinato del ex primer ministro Shinzo Abe, citando la necesidad de un «nuevo comienzo» para la organización y sus tareas de seguridad.
Itaru Nakamura es el funcionario de mayor rango que renuncia en relación con el asesinato de Abe en un mitin de campaña en la ciudad occidental de Nara el pasado 8 de julio, en el que, según los expertos, la seguridad tuvo graves fallos.
«En el proceso de verificación de nuestro nuevo plan de seguridad, nos hemos dado cuenta de que nuestras tareas de seguridad necesitan un nuevo comienzo», ha dicho Nakamura en una conferencia de prensa.
Los guardaespaldas podrían haber salvado a Abe protegiéndolo o sacándolo de la línea de fuego en los 2,5 segundos que transcurrieron entre un primer disparo fallido y la segunda ronda de disparos mortales, según han declarado a Reuters ocho expertos en seguridad que revisaron las imágenes.
El jefe de la policía de Nara, Tomoaki Onizuka, también ha dimitido. «Como jefe de policía con responsabilidad en materia de seguridad en esta prefectura, soy dolorosamente consciente de mi responsabilidad por haber provocado una situación grave», ha declarado en una rueda de prensa.
