Tras el conteo del 66,3 % de los votos, el Partido Laborista encabezado por Anthony Albanese obtiene 72 escaños en la Cámara de Representantes. La Coalición Liberal-Nacional, que está en el poder y es liderada por el actual primer ministro del país, Scott Morrison, de momento ha asegurado 50 diputados.
Para ganar la mayoría, se requieren 76 escaños. El líder del partido, o coalición de formaciones políticas, que obtiene la mayoría en la Cámara de Representantes se convierte automáticamente en el primer ministro de Australia. De este modo, Albanese tiene buenas perspectivas para suceder a Morrison.
Morrison ya ha reconocido su derrota. «Hablé con el líder de la oposición y el primer ministro entrante, Anthony Albanese. Y lo felicité por su victoria electoral esta noche», declaró en una reunión del partido, deseando «todo lo mejor» a su rival, según el portal News.com.au.
Por su parte, Albanese dio las gracias a sus compatriotas y aseguró la victoria de su partido. «Esta noche, el pueblo australiano ha votado por un cambio», dijo el político citado por ABC.
Las elecciones de este sábado ponen fin a una etapa marcada por tres Gobiernos conservadores, desde que el Partido Liberal ganara los comicios del 2013.
