En China estalló un escándalo después de que las ilustraciones de unos libros publicados por la editorial estatal People’s Education Press desataran un debate en las redes sociales chinas debido a que contenían ilustraciones «feas» y moral y políticamente inapropiadas.
Al respecto, el sábado el Ministerio de Educación del país asiático ordenó una rigurosa inspección de los manuales escolares de primaria y secundaria en todo el país e instó a a tomar medidas para atajar el escándalo.
De acuerdo al Global Times, dado que las imágenes no solo parecían desviarse de la estética común, sino que también incluían connotaciones sexuales, muchos sospecharon que los libros de texto no se habían sometido a una corrección ni a una revisión adecuadas.
La polémica estalló hace una semana, cuando se hicieron virales unas fotos de manuales de matemáticas para alumnos de primaria en las que se veía a algunos niños en posturas extrañas, con la boca torcida, la lengua sacada y los ojos entrecerrados. Algunos llevan ropa que imitaba la bandera nacional de Estados Unidos, otro aparentaba tener un tatuaje en el tobillo, mientras que una niña iba a la escuela en un disfraz de conejita.
Sin embargo, el incidente derivó en una agria controversia cuando el público descubrió lo que muchos internautas tacharon de «acoso sexual», ya que las viñetas de los libros de texto mostraban a niños sin pantalones y con los órganos reproductores masculinos representados de forma explícita

La editorial, por su parte, declaró este sábado que se sentía profundamente culpable y anunció la retirada de todos los manuales involucrados en el escándalo. Además, la compañía señaló que había creado un equipo de diseñadores para sustituir todas las imágenes de los libros de matemáticas para que sus nuevas ediciones pudieran utilizarse en el próximo semestre de otoño.
