Andalucía ha registrado el primer caso de un paciente infectado de COVID-19 y a la vez de virus del Nilo Occidental. Se trataría de un hombre joven que ingresó en el hospital Virgen del Rocío de Sevilla por un cuadro sintomático de coronavirus.
Ante la sospecha de padecer una meningitis, tal vez ocasionada por el virus del Nilo Occidental, los sanitarios decidieron hacerle las pruebas necesarias. También era positivo en la segunda enfermedad.
«No hay constancias de otros pacientes y el afectado presenta un cuadro atípico. Es muy importante retroceder a la fecha de indicios de síntomas», reconoce el hematólogo Salvador Oyonarte, miembro del Comité Científico para la Seguridad Transfusional del Ministerio de Sanidad y gerente de la Red Andaluza de Medicina Transfusional, Tejidos y Células.
Según el experto, hacen falta más análisis para determinar si la meningoencefalitis fue provocada por el virus del Nilo Occidental o si su debilidad al contraer el coronavirus propició el desarrollo de este mal. También se desconoce cual de las dos le afectó primero.
El último verano, la meningoencefalitis por virus del Nilo Occidental dejó siete muertos y 71 afectados entre las provincias de Sevilla y Cádiz.
Varios drones fumigaron la zona para acabar con el mosquito en el Valle del Guadalquivir. Además, la Junta de Andalucía presentó en marzo un mapa de riesgos que se actualiza cada 15 días entre abril y noviembre. De este dependen las actuaciones del Gobierno autonómico contra esta enfermedad, que tiene una tasa de mortalidad del 0,1% entre los infectados.
