Las autoridades federales de Salud de Estados Unidos informaron el día de ayer (viernes) que seis niños han fallecido por hepatitis infantil, mientras que 180 casos más de la enfermedad, cuyas causas de contagio aún se desconocen, han sido detectados.
Hasta el momento se cree que la infección se debe a la presencia del adenovirus 41, aunque especialistas de los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) investigan otros factores como si los menores que se han contagiado de Covid-19 son más susceptibles a contraer hepatitis.
Jay Butler, director adjunto de enfermedades infecciosas de los CDC, destacó que los casos que están siendo investigados no son un brote repentino, sino que constan de varios meses atrás.
Un reporte de la Organización Mundial de la Salud(OMS) indican que las infecciones se han presentado en niños de un mes de edad y adolescentes de 16 años.
Aproximadamente el 10% de los niños infectados han requerido trasplante de hígado y se han reportado varios fallecimientos en distintas partes del mundo.
