El Gobierno de Finlandia ha tomado la decisión de solicitar la membresía en la OTAN, anunciaron este domingo el presidente finlandés, Sauli Niinisto, y la primera ministra, Sanna Marin.
Se espera que el Parlamento finlandés respalde la decisión en los próximos días, aunque se considera que esto es solamente una formalidad. Después de ello, Finlandia entregará la solicitud de adhesión a la Alianza Atlántica en su sede en Bruselas, paso que se dará con toda probabilidad la próxima semana.

Niinisto y Marin anunciaron su intención de solicitar el ingreso al bloque militar «sin demora» el jueves, adelantando que «se acerca el momento de la toma de decisiones». El sábado, el mandatario finlandés llamó por teléfono a su homólogo ruso, Vladímir Putin, para comunicarle que Helsinki planea presentar la solicitud de ingreso en el bloque militar en los próximos días para reforzar su propia seguridad.
