La pauta completa de la vacuna de Pfizer protege de la posibilidad de contraer covid-19 solo al 22,5 % en el caso de la variante ómicron, determinó un equipo de científicos liderado por el Instituto de Investigación de Salud de África (AHRI) en Durban (Sudáfrica).
Al descubrir que la nueva cepa evade en gran medida la protección de los anticuerpos inducida por la vacuna de Pfizer y «compromete esencialmente la capacidad de la vacuna para proteger contra la infección», los investigadores pudieron concluir que, en todo caso, la vacunación podría ayudar a evitar el transcurso grave del covid-19, ya que el nivel de neutralización de ómicron se estimó en alrededor del 5,7 %.
«Los niveles de neutralización mucho más bajos son suficientes para la protección contra la enfermedad grave, aunque esta estimación es difícil de validar», escribieron en el estudio. El nivel actual de neutralización de ómicron «está por encima de este nivel mínimo y, por lo tanto, sería más o menos suficiente para la protección contra la enfermedad grave», agregaron.
En el marco de la investigación, los científicos analizaron 14 muestras de plasma de 12 personas, la mitad de las cuales no había padecido covid-19 ni tenía anticuerpos que pudieran indicar una infección previa. La prueba de neutralización consistió en agregar a las muestras el virus vivo, ya fuera ómicron o la variante original del SARS-CoV-2.
Otra conclusión del experimento fue que la situación resultó ser mucho mejor en el caso de los vacunados que ya habían pasado por coronavirus. Cinco de los seis participantes del estudio que habían contraído covid-19 y estaban vacunados con el producto de Pfizer mostraron unos niveles de neutralización lo suficientemente altos como para protegerlos tanto de la infección por ómicron como de una enfermedad grave. En ese sentido, los científicos apuntaron a una posible necesidad de una tercera dosis de refuerzo después de la vacunación inicial.
