La vicepresidenta de EE.UU., Kamala Harris, ha anunciado este lunes una moratoria en las pruebas de armas antisatélite, durante una visita a la Base de la Fuerza Espacial de Vandenberg, en California.
«Me complace anunciar que, a partir de hoy, Estados Unidos se compromete a no realizar pruebas destructivas de misiles antisatélites. Sencillamente, esas pruebas son peligrosas, y no lo haremos», señaló la alta funcionaria. «En nombre de Estados Unidos, pido a todos los países que se unan, ya sea si un país es una potencia espacial o no», añadió.
Asimismo, Harris resaltó que la prohibición que Washington se autoimpone es un esfuerzo por iniciar un impulso internacional para desarrollar «nuevas normas de comportamiento responsable en el espacio».
La última vez que EE.UU. realizó una prueba de arma antisatélite fue en 2008, cuando un misil antiaéreo SM-3 impactó contra un satélite de reconocimiento estadounidense que no funcionaba, según la CNBC. China, Rusia e India también han realizado pruebas similares en los últimos años.
Pruebas como la que Rusia realizó en noviembre de 2021 y China en 2007 son «una de las amenazas más importantes para la seguridad y la sostenibilidad del espacio», señaló la vicepresidenta, y aseguró que se utilizarían para negar a EE.UU. toda su habilidad para utilizar sus «capacidades espaciales».
Tras la prueba realizada por Rusia el año pasado, el Ministerio de Defensa de ese país tachó entonces de «hipócritas» las acusaciones de Washington de que Moscú creaba supuestos «riesgos» para los astronautas en la Estación Espacial Internacional: «Durante varios años, Rusia ha estado pidiendo a EE.UU. y otras potencias espaciales que firmen un acuerdo sobre la prevención del despliegue de armas en el espacio. Sin embargo, EE.UU. y sus aliados están bloqueando su adopción», comunicaron los militares rusos.
