Jiang Zemin, expresidente de China, falleció este miércoles en Shanghái a los 96 años de edad a causa de una leucemia que padecía y un fallo multiorgánica, informó la agencia Xinhua.
Durante su carrera política, Jiang ocupó el cargo de secretario general del Partido Comunista de China (1989-2002) y de presidente de la República Popular China (1993-2003).
AFP informa que, cuando Jiang llegó al poder, en 1989, el gigante asiático se encontraba en una temprana fase de su modernización económica, pero durante su mandato el país pasó a ser miembro de la Organización Mundial del Comercio y ya se puso en el camino para convertirse en una gran potencia.
En la carta oficial sobre la muerte de Jiang se destaca que «fue un líder sobresaliente que gozó de alto prestigio reconocido por todo el Partido, todo el Ejército y todos los grupos étnicos del pueblo chino. Gran marxista, gran revolucionario proletario, estadista, estratega militar y diplomático», señala Xinhua.
