El Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGC por sus siglas en inglés), informó que el movimiento telúrico se produjo a una profundidad de 35 kilómetros. El epicentro del sismo se situó a 106 kilómetros al sureste de Perryville.
Por su parte, el Centro Nacional de Alertas de Tsunamis de EEUU estimó la magnitud del sismo en 8.2 e informó de un posible tsunami.
