India y Estados Unidos lucharán conjuntamente contra el terrorismo y tomarán medidas coordinadas contra todos los grupos terroristas, declararon el primer ministro indio, Narendra Modi, y el presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, en una declaración conjunta emitida después de una reunión cara a cara.
El encuentro entre los dos líderes tuvo lugar el 24 de septiembre en la Casa Blanca. Durante el encuentro los mandatarios de esos países discutieron cómo Nueva Delhi y Washington ampliarían aún más la cooperación en varias áreas y trabajarían unidos para abordar problemas clave como el COVID-19 y el cambio climático.
Asímismo Modi y Biden condenaron además el terrorismo internacional y pidieron que los responsables de los ataques contra Bombay fueran llevados ante los tribunales.
Ambos «condenaron cualquier uso de intermediarios terroristas y destacaron la importancia de parar cualquier apoyo logístico, financiero o militar de grupos terroristas que puedan usarse para cometer o planificar ataques».
Los mandatarios señalaron que «el próximo grupo de trabajo conjunto de Estados Unidos y la India contra el terrorismo (…) y el diálogo renovado sobre seguridad interna contribuirán a fortalecer aún más la cooperación antiterrorista (…), en particular, en las áreas de intercambio de inteligencia y de la cooperación policial».
Los líderes de la India y EEUU elogiaron la labor del grupo de trabajo sobre drogas entre los Estados Unidos y la India y se comprometieron a completar un nuevo marco bilateral que contribuirá a los esfuerzos conjuntos para combatir el narcotráfico, la producción ilícita de drogas y las cadenas de suministro de sustancias químicas.
«El presidente Biden confirmó que Estados Unidos apoya la membresía permanente de la India y de otros países en un Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU reformado».
El ataque en Bombay se perpetró el 26 de noviembre de 2008. Diez terroristas llegaron a la ciudad por mar desde el puerto pakistaní de Karachi. Se dividieron en grupos y dispararon contra la gente en las calles, cafés y estaciones de tren, luego se atrincheraron en hoteles de lujo y opusieron resistencia a las fuerzas especiales durante dos días, antes de ser abatidos.
Los terroristas asesinaron a 166 personas. El atentado complicó la relación ya difícil existente entre la India y Pakistán.
